I am all over the place this morning. For some reason I can’t get my head wrapped around the day. I am off track and the trains (four of them, small, loud, demanding trains) that usually run wildly but in some semblance of order were derailing all over the place this morning. Dex suggested it was because it was grey this morning. But if that were true, I’d be like this 7 days out of 10 around here. Nothing awful happened, no major catastrophes, which is good but which also would have given cause for my inept and bumbling efforts to gain control of the day.
We ran late. So late that as Edward was asking for seconds on his cereal, I realized he had to be dressed and ready for the bus in 5 minutes. Ever try to get a nine-year old boy dressed and out the door in 5 minutes? IT CANNOT BE DONE. Because I was driving the girls to the neighbor’s house this morning, I decided to drive Edward to school too. Davey made it on his bus on time, thanks to help from Dex who was roused from his sleep (at 8 a.m. …. ahem) to give me a hand.
In the end, everyone got where they needed to go on time, clean, and ready for the day ahead. I even felt a little moment of triumph. As we pulled into the elementary school parking lot, Edward said something about it being Wednesday.
“No, it’s Thursday.”
“Oh NOOOO. I need my recorder today because we’re having an extra music class and-”
“It’s already in your backpack, buddy.”
A pause. “It is?”
It was the way he said it, his tone a mixture of relief and disbelief. Well, kid, after this morning I wouldn’t believe I had it in me to be so on the ball either.
I have no idea why I am so mentally discombobulated today. I guess I’ll just roll with it today. The real Dervish will be back in the office tomorrow.
