Nature XXVII, Autumn
by Emily Dickinson
The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry’s cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I’ll put a trinket on.

Tap, tap, tappity… ding!

You will think me old fashioned, I fear. But I cannot help it. Though I use a computer (or two) every day, I am a devotee of the mechanical letter-making device known as the typewriter. I own … hmm…. five? Well, as of today, make that six. I scored a Smith Corona Coronet Automatic 12 (electric, late 60s?), […]

It’s still summer… somewhere
August 23rd, 2007 · 1 Comment
I woke again to overcast skies. At least it was warm enough that the heat didn’t kick on like it has for the past several mornings.
Since the day we arrived home almost three weeks ago, I have been reminding myself that it is still summer. I find myself walking around my house and turning on lights […]

Usually, these visions, from which I have to rouse myself by sitting […]

Today is the 133rd Run for the Roses. Happy Derby Day!
I love horses. I love horse racing. Part of me thinks perhaps I should not love horse racing as much as I do. I have only to recall the sickening images from last year’s Preakness to fuel my doubts about the sport of kings. Yet, horse […]

Happy Anniversary, Babe

Whew… we’ve made it to our “smallest positive integer requiring three syllables in English”-th anniversary. Congratulations to us! Much has happened in the years since our beautiful wedding day. I can’t help but think of the people who have arrived in our lives (kids, lots of kids! nephew! neices!) and the people who sadly have […]

Love and Loathing In One Convenient Package
April 18th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Loathing is perhaps too strong a word. Then again, in the moment, perhaps that’s exactly what it is. The dichotomy is not unique to our relationship, yet the reality of it takes my breath away. It has been raining for days, and chilly too, so not a lovely spring rain for frolicking. It is spring […]
