Indoor recess

October 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Today it was (is) drizzling and chilly, so Edward’s school called for an indoor recess before lunch. Because I am a wonderful person, I volunteered to stay and watch over his class while the teacher ate her lunch and had a bit of a break. I had visions of spitballs whizzing into the back of my head and other mayhem, but the kids were great. They formed little clusters on the rug, some doing blocks, others working with wooden shapes or drawing on giant sheets of paper. For the most part, they ignored me as I meandered around the room, feeling silly in my bright orange playground monitor vest (super snazzy!). The teacher ducked back in and asked me to herd them to lunch at the proper time. When I saw another 3rd grade class pass by in the hall, I told my class to cleanup. They actually did, with minor disturbance, and lined up at the classroom door.

Poor Edward could not find his milk money. I had packed him lunch today, including chocolate milk, but he had asked to buy milk instead, wanting it cold and fresh. He came up to me at the classroom door and asked for another 50 cents. Alas, all my pockets held were my cellphone, car keys, and 15 cents in change. It was a little thing, but I still felt awful about disappointing him.
