I snapped awake, sat up and looked out the west window. The patch of sky was bright pink, streaked with red and pale orange. “Red sky in morning, sailors take warning….” I rose and went to the window. The horses were at the hay rack, munching. The sky, despite the ominous proverb, looked beautiful.
This morning, while playing outside with the girls, I snap more wide angle shots of the yard, the house, the barn. I like to capture our daily world as it is. Things change, the small details, and we don’t even notice until we look back years later and say, “Oh, remember when we had that old porch swing, and remember when our yard was covered in toddler toys.”
As a photographer, I have several different objectives when I pick up my camera. I am constantly shifting between modes, depending on what I am shooting. Often I shoot the same subject with more than one of these objectives in mind.
- artistic - landscapes, night photos, various series of images
- personal - the kids, the house, family events, vacations
- documentary - both personal and in the world at large, documenting the daily scenes and details of life, the background we take for granted

Yesterday, I went on an artistic photo jaunt. Just a short one, to a local river. I walked around a small park and snapped images of a small brick structure (with no idea what it was built for), reflections of fading foliage on the water, the wide expanse of the calm river. I also snapped some images on the way home of a couple of historic homes and barns (dime a dozen around here). Then last night, I shifted modes and snapped pics of my kids in their Halloween costumes, running door to door.

I will be starting a new feature here. Through mostly photos, also some writing, I want to share New England with you. I realized that the sights I take for granted are unfamiliar to many and so would like to show you some of the world I inhabit - for the time we are still here.
